Computer Security

Includes: Cryptography, Computer Networks, Operating Systems, Databases

York is the only university in Ontario to offer a program in Computer Security, meeting the demand for people trained in computer system protection. Computer Security involves ensuring the privacy of personal data, preventing unauthorized access to computer systems, ensuring back-up contingency plans in the event of data loss, and protecting systems from malicious activity such as denial of service attacks, viruses and worms. The need for people able both to devise protections and combat threats when they occur is evident and crucial for maintenance of our economy and the technologies we rely upon daily such as telephone systems and the electricity power grid.

The BA and BSc programs provide foundational computer science and mathematics courses, and also in-depth education in areas such as computer networks, cryptography, operating systems, databases and software engineering techniques. In addition, a solid understanding of applied ethics, management and operational practices, and relevant legal concepts are important elements of the program. You also have the opportunity to do an optional four- to 16-month paid internship between third and fourth years.

Careers: Computer Security Analyst, Software Security Engineer, Network Security Specialist, Information Security Analyst
