Earth & Atmospheric Science

Includes: Earth Science stream, Atmospheric Science stream, Certificate in Meteorology, Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing, Geomatics

York’s Earth & Atmospheric Science program provides instruction in the fundamental sciences of the Earth and its atmosphere from the structure and dynamics of the deep interior to atmospheric motions and composition. Students learn the cause and effect of Earth phenomena like earthquakes, volcanoes, avalanches and geomagnetism in the Earth Science stream. Modern tools such as GPS, geographic information systems, remote sensing, and geophysical instruments are used in the discovery and management of natural resources. In the Atmospheric Science stream an important focus is weather prediction. Students study a wide variety of topics including weather forecasting, air pollution and air chemistry, climate change, cloud and precipitation physics, and boundary layer processes.

York is the only university in Ontario offering the Certificate in Meteorology, which provides specialist education in atmospheric phenomena and is the basic academic requirement to be hired as a weather forecaster by the Meteorological Services of Canada. The Meteorological Service of Canada recruits York graduates in the Atmospheric Science stream, and graduates have been hired by the Weather Network, the CBC Met Office and CBC Radio.
