The Bachelor of Science Technology in Applied Biotechnology is a special joint program with Seneca College that provides a practical and theoretical foundation for working in the field of biotechnology.
The Bachelor of Science in Biology is a flexible program that offers students a diversity of courses ranging from molecules to ecosystems. Students can choose courses from many different areas in biology, or focus study in a particular field such as physiology, cell and molecular biology, genetics or ecology.
The Specialized Honours Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, focuses on the chemistry of life, considering biology at the molecular and submolecular level. This program is shared with the department of Chemistry. This program is offered as both a Specialized Honours & Honours Major degree.
The Biomedical Science Stream of the Bachelor of Science Biology provides a comprehensive curriculum to prepare you for a career in biomedical research, medicine and other health-related professions. Courses focus on biomedically-relevant areas of cell and molecular biology and physiology: immunology, neurobiology, molecular genetics, cancer biology, animal physiology, genomics and proteomics, etc.
The Specialized Honours Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology focuses on the innovative use of living organisms to create new products that improve human health, food and the environment. This stream includes courses in molecular and cell biology, genetics, chemistry and biochemistry as well as economics and ethics.
York’s Program in Environmental Biology (B.Sc.) focuses on the biological components of environmental science . Students take the general science foundation offered in the first-year core program in biology, as well as courses in ecology, whole organism biology, evolutionary biology, and data analysis. Students also learn vital skill sets from lab and field experiences. In the upper years, students build on this foundation with electives that allow them to explore myriad sub-disciplines and applications, including population and community ecology, biodiversity, aquatic biology, and conservation biology, among others.
In addition to the Environmental Biology program courses, students have the option of adding a second science major or a non-science minor. The program also allows students in another major to take a minor in Environmental Biology. Students seeking further diversity and adventure have the opportunity of studying abroad, taking a field course, or taking their Environmental Biology within York’s Co-op program.
The Environmental Biology major is an education with an emphasis on core scientific principles, critical reading and writing skills, and the ability to understand, apply and communicate scientific concepts and results. It equips students for further study, for research, and for work across government, conservation organizations, and the private sector in areas of consulting, assessment, outreach, and management.
