How we are organised
The Faculty of Science and the YU Experience Hub work together to offer this program and to support students in achieving their co-op goals.
The Faculty sets academic requirements, promotes the program to students, advises students interested in co-op, and selects those students to whom admission is offered. The Faculty also evaluates students’ work term reports as a basis for assigning a pass/fail grade for the work term course that will be on your transcript.
The Co-op Coordinator at the YU Experience Hub is dedicated to supporting Science co-op students in their job search through one-on-one appointments and workshops such as resume writing, interview skills and on-the-job success. The YU Experience Hub also monitors your work term, interacting with the employer as necessary and collects various deliverables such as your learning agreement, work term report, and employer evaluation. The YU Experiencce Hub is primarily responsible for promoting the program to employers and ensuring there are sufficient jobs postings relevant to students’ fields of study.
Co-op is Competitive!
Being in the co-op program does not guarantee you a job. It’s a competitive process, and it’s up to you to research and seek out co-op opportunities, apply to positions, and impress a potential employer. The YU Experience Hub’s Co-op Coordinator is available to support you during your job search and will inform you of opportunities posted for co-op students.
The ideal sequencing of the program would be for students to complete their first four month work term in the summer following their second year of academic study. Students would then return to complete one or two academic terms during their third year and then complete a 8 to 12 months work term (most likely two or more 4 month work terms consecutively) starting either in the next summer, fall or winter. Students may not finish their degree program with a work term; you must have at least 9 credits remaining in your academic program after completing your last work term.
