Currently the Faculty of Science is piloting co-op programs in a few selected programs:
- the Biotechnology stream of the Biology specialised honours program
- Environmental Biology
- Environmental Science
Benefits of Co-op
Co-op gives students professional, paid work experience related to their program of study. Each job is approved by York University to ensure that students are engaging in productive and meaningful work in their respective disciplines. During their work terms students will have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in a real work environment.
The pilot co-op programs include expected full-time, paid work terms in the summer following the first two years of study and again for at least an 8 month period following the third year of study. Students also take a preparatory academic course in professional communications. Finding a work term is competitive and requires sustained effort. As with most university co-op programs the university does not “find you a job”! Our co-op sudents have already been successful securing work terms with Sanofi-Pasteur and MG Chemicals for example.

Paid internships are extended work periods (4, 8, 12 or 16 months) for third year, full-time honours students, specializing in one of the applicable programs of study.
Currently participating programs include:
- Physics and Astronomy (honours program, all streams)
Students must also meet the mandatory academic eligibility requirements in order to be considered for the Internship Programs.
