The teaching of mathematics in the schools is of vital importance to a literate and prosperous community. How to teach mathematics is a topic of much debate over the years. Our Department of Mathematics and Statistics has created one of the few degree programs that focuses attention on mathematics and how it is taught.
While the emphasis is on mathematical foundations, and hence courses in the first two years are largely common with other mathematics programs, in later years requirements range across geometry, history and applied topics with a perspective that informs approaches to education. Understanding how to communicate mathematical ideas, as well as what learners do when they tackle mathematics, are key emphases of the program.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics and key faculty members have close ties with the Faculty of Education, and many students choose to pursue a BEd along with this degree program.
