Lagoon Nebula is Sky News Magazine’s photo of the week
Richard Bloch from the Observatory has the Sky News Magazine’s photo of the week. The Lagoon Nebula, on the left, is an area of star formation, where the light of new stars illuminates the surrounding gas. It is estimated to be 4,000 light-years from Earth, and is 110 light-years tall, as measured across its long edge. The Trifid Nebula, on the right, is also a star forming region, about 5,000 light-years from Earth. The Trifid Nebula is approximately 40 light-years in diameter.
Richard Bloch, used a Canon 600D and a Sky-Watcher 80mm telescope, at an airstrip outside of Kingston, Ontario. Richard is currently pursuing his undergraduate degree in both Astronomy and Political Science, and is actively engaged in research and outreach activities at the York University Astronomical Observatory.
