A wide variety of recruitment events require the help of the of SSAs. Some occur once or twice a year such as the Ontario University Fair and Open Houses, while others occur throughout each term such as Explore Science and Science Tours. The list of events can be found here.
No. However, SSAs are required to attend a minimum of one event per semester. There is also a reward system for SSAs wherein each event and how long you volunteer for at that event will gain you points, which you may redeem later for rewards ranging from York Science water bottles and sweatshirts to letters of achievement from the Dean’s office.
You will receive regular emails throughout the term from the Science Recruitment Officer or Assistant. They will inform you of upcoming events weeks in advance, providing you with forms or Google Sheets in which you can register as an SSA for that specific event.
You can apply during the recruitment season (beginning May 2019) by submitting an application, which will be reviewed by the Science Recruitment Officer. If accepted, you are required to participate in volunteering, as this will ensure your position in the SSA program.
You can enhance your communication and public speaking skills, network with peers and faculty within the York community, develop transferable leadership and responsibility skills, and simply have fun while being an incredibly useful asset in recruitment for York.
There is a short training day that new SSAs will be required to attend. This is will take place prior to the start of the Fall term (the Ontario University Fair in September will be a great start to put your skills to use!).
