A great diversity of research and teaching activities at York are supported by full technical service facilities, including a machine shop, a student machine shop, an electronics shop, a glassblowing shop and two science stores.

The technicians hold in excess of 150 years of combined experience among them. Work is requested by submitting a Job Request Form to the shop staff by e-mail or in person. A $65 per hour rate* applies to all work done by shop staff. Materials are extra and are not included in hourly rates.
*Note: The Faculties of Science and Health will subsidize work performed for staff and faculty members whose home Faculty is Science or Health. Contact shop staff for these rates.
Consultation on electrical/electronic/electro-mechanical/PC issues. Typically, this might include fabricating cables, ordering parts, technical advice, or a quick assessment of a defective instrument.
Repair to wide variety of observatory and lab equipment and instrumentation. Typically, this has included observatory and lab instruments (telescopes, lasers, power supplies, oscilloscopes, meters), and temperature/motor-related equipment (incubators, ovens, hot plates, temperature and flow controllers, centrifuges, pumps).
Custom electronic circuit design ranging from basic circuits to complex instrumentation. Typical past projects include:
– amplifiers of various types
– motor/valve control circuits
– unique experimental setups with data acquisition
– integration of instrument and PC
Troubleshoot PC-related hardware and software problems. Install hardware and software components.
The machine shop specializes in full machining and welding including technical consultations, design manufacture and repairs.

The shop offers consultation on conceptual and physical design, material selection and sourcing, machining feasibility and cost effective alternatives for new projects as well as repair, modification or updating existing hardware.
Electro-Mechanical Design and Fabrication
Parts design & documentation in SolidWorks or autoCAD.
Custom fabrication using client supplied or shop generated drawings, often to height precision tolerances. We are fully competent in machining of most metals (ferrous and non-ferrous), plastics, ceramics, nylon, Teflon, PVC, ABS and wood.

If any existing equipment breaks down, shop staff will diagnose the problems, and coordinate parts replacement & repair. If replacement parts are not available, then custom parts can be made from stock material.
The Glassblowing Shop specializes in custom design and/or repair of scientific glassware, including technical consultations.
