A message from Dean Rui Wang on anti-Black racism
Dear Faculty of Science Community,
As we are shocked and outraged by the tragic loss of many Black lives in recent years and the horrific violence and discrimination against the Black community, the Faculty of Science at York University condemns the systemic anti-Black racism that has a long history and is ongoing. Anti-Black racism generates excessive injustice and can occur anywhere in everyday situations, causing fear, anxiety and anger.
At the Faculty of Science, we are committed to social justice and treating everyone with the respect and dignity we all deserve. We uphold the values of equity, diversity and inclusiveness that define our Faculty. We support and encourage all faculty members, staff and students to speak out and stand up against anti-Black racism and hatred in all its forms. Together, we want to make the Faculty of Science a better, safer, and more equitable place for everyone.
Knowing that we have a long battle against social injustice, I would like to assure everyone that the Faculty of Science is taking steps to determine specific actions to combat racism and promote respect and diversity. This will include listening and engaging with our faculty members, staff and students to better understand their needs and challenges. Our academic, research, and administrative efforts will be continued to strengthen the structural fabric across the Faculty with justice and equity.
If you have suggestions or would like to reach out in the meantime for support, please don’t hesitate to contact, in confidence, at firstname.lastname@example.org
